How to write an Environmental Policy
If a brand wants to become more sustainable, there are many areas where a brand should focus. However, one of the main areas that a sustainable brand should focus on, should be on it’s environmental commitments. However, to begin this journey, it starts with having an environmental policy. So how do you write an environmental policy and what should you consider?
What is an Environmental Policy and how do you write one?
Before you begin to write an environmental policy, what exactly is an Environmental Policy?
An environmental policy is an organization’s public commitment to the environment. It should
bring together the environmental vision of all key stakeholders including, employees, directors,
partners, shareholders, customers, and suppliers.
An environmental policy is the initial building block to reducing an organization’s environmental footprint. An environmental policy should include considerations given to growth, expansion, and future long-term goals. When writing an environmental policy, keep it short and simple.
Create commitments that are realistic and achievable to the organization’s activities. However, before you begin, you must consider many issues.

Some of the commitments you might want to consider, prior to writing a environmental policy may include:
- Educate staff on environmental issues that pertain to the organization. Encourage them to
think “Green” and create company Green Teams - Work in partnership with suppliers to improve environmental conditions
- Use of low environmental impact materials in goods that are created
- Reduction of waste (paper, cardboard, fabric) throughout your supply chain
- Identify where you can recycle and re-use materials in your supply chain
- Reduction of water use in your supply chain
- Wastewater treatment if required
- Reduction of energy use in your supply chain
- Reduction of chemical use and hazardous waste production in your supply chain
- Creation of a sustainable (green) purchasing policy
- Comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations within your jurisdiction and
those that you conduct business in - Look to reduce all travel where possible including shipments of goods and employee
transportation (eg. use zoom calling) - Support local community actions within the community you live and work in
